นานมาแล้วที่เมืองแคนซัสอันไกลโพ้น หนูน้อยโดโรธีอาศัยอยู่กับลุงเฮนรี่ คุณป้าเอม และหมาน้อยโตโต้ วันหนึ่งเกิดพายุไซโคลนพัดเอาเธอและบ้านหมุนเคว้งลอยขึ้นฟ้า ตกลงมาทับแม่มดแห่งตะวันออกที่อาศัยอยู่ ณ ดินแดนแห่งออซตาย ร่างสลายไปหมด เหลือเพียงร้องเท้าวิเศษสีเงินของแม่มดเท่านั้น
ผู้คนที่ดินแดนแห่งออซขอบคุณโดโรธีที่ช่วยฆ่าแม่มดใจร้ายและมอบรองเท้าวิเศษของแม่มดให้เธอ โดรโรธีหาทางกลับบ้าน พวกเขาจึงแนะนำให้โดโรธีไปถามทางจากพ่อมดแห่งออซผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ ที่มีความเก่งกล้าสามารถเหนือใครในดินแดนแห่งนี้ ปราสาทพ่อมดอยู่สุดถนนก้อนอิฐสีเหลือง เธอและโตโต้ จึงออกเดินทางไปหาพ่อมดทันที

“เอ่อ ใครกัน พ่อมดแห่งออซ ข้าไม่รู้จักหรอก จริงๆแล้ว ข้าไม่รู้จักใครๆ เลย เพราะข้าไม่มีสมอง”
“งั้นเราไปหาพ่อมดด้วยกันมั้ย บางทีพ่อมดอาจให้สมองแก่เธอได้นะ”
“เออ ไปสิไป”

โดโรธีและหุ่นไล่กาออกเดินทางต่อไป คืนนั้นที่กระท่อมหลังหนึ่ง เธอได้พบมนุษย์สังกะสี เป็นสนิมทั้งตัว ยืนนิ่งไปไหนไม่ได้ เธอจึงเอาน้ำมันมาหยอดตามข้อต่อจนเขาขยับตัวได้ มนุษย์สังกะสีคิดว่าพ่อมดน่าจะมอบหัวใจให้เขาได้ จึงขอตามไปเมืองมรกตด้วย

ระหว่างทางมีสิงโตตัวใหญ่คำรามใส่เจ้าโตโต้แต่ไม่น่ากลัวเลย โดโรธีว่ามันเป็นสิงโตจี้ขลาด รังแกแม้แต่สุนัขตัวเล็ก มันยอมรับโดยดี และขอเดินทางไปพบพ่อมดด้วย เผื่อพ่อมดจะมอบความกล้าหาญให้มันได้

ในที่สุดโดโรธีและเพื่อนๆก็เดินทางถึงเมืองมรกต และได้พบพ่อมดที่มีศีรษะขนาดใหญ่โต
“ข้าคือพ่อมดแห่งออซ พวกเจ้าต้องการอะไร”
“หนูชื่อโดโรธี หนูอยากกลับบ้านที่เมืองแคนซัส”
“หุ่นไล่กาล่ะ เจ้าต้องการอะไร”
“ข้า อยากมีสมอง จะได้คิดอ่านจดจำอะไรได้”
“ข้าคือมนุษย์สังกะสี ข้าอยากได้หัวใจ จะได้มีความรู้สึกเหมือนมนุษย์ทั่วไป”
“แล้วเจ้าล่ะ เจ้าสิงโต”
“ข้าอยากได้ความกล้าหาญ ทุกคนจะได้เกรงกลัวข้า”
“ได้ พวกเจ้าจะได้ทุกอย่างตามที่ขอ แต่มีข้อแม้ว่าพวกเจ้าจะต้องฆ่าแม่มดตะวันตกให้ได้ก่อน”
ทั้งหมดออกเดินทางไปพบแม่มดแห่งตะวันตก ระหว่างทางแม่มดสั่งฝูงหมา่าให้มาฉีกร่างโดโรธีและเพื่อนๆ แต่ฝูงหมาป่าตกใจกลัวสิงโต วิ่งหนีกลับไป แม่มดสั่งให้ฝูงกามาไล่จิก พวกมันก็กลัวหุ่นไล่กา บินหนีกลับไป แม่มดสั่งฝูงผึ้งมารุมต่อย แต่ก็ต่อยมนุษย์สังกะสีไม่ได้ สุดท้ายแม่มดคิดจะทำร้ายโดโรธี แต่ก็ไม่สามารถทำได้ เพราะรองเท้าสีเงินที่เธอสวมอยู่นั้น มีพลังวิเศษ แม่มดพยายามแย่งรองเท้าวิเศษจากโดโรธี เธอจึงสาดน้ำไปที่ตัวแม่มด ทันใดนั้นแม่มดร้ายก็ตัวหดเล็กลงกลายเป็นหมาพุดเดิ้ล
(เสียงหมาเห่า)
เมื่อโดโรธีและเพื่อนๆ ปราบแม่มดแห่งตะวันตกได้จึงรีบกลับมาหาพ่อมด และก็รู้ความจริงว่าที่แท้พ่อมดหัวยักษ์ก็คือชายแก่ใจดีร่างเล็ก และทุกๆคน ก็ร้องขอรางวัลจากพ่อมดแห่งออซ

“ว้าว ข้าฉลาดแล้ว ความคิดแจ๋วขึ้นมาทันที อ่านเขียนจำได้เต็มที่ เพราะข้ามีสมองเหมือนคน”
♫ เจ้ามนุษย์สังกะสี อยากจะมีหัวใจใช่มั้ย หมอนหัวใจนี่ไง ข้ามอบใจให้เจ้าไปเลย ♫
“นี่เหรอหัวใจข้า ข้าชอบยิ่งนัก รู้สึกถึงความรัก อารมณ์หลากหลายเหมือนใจคน”

ส่วนโดโรธีที่อยากกลับบ้าน พ่อมดพาเธอไปขอความช่วยเหลือจากนางฟ้ากลินด้า นางฟ้าบอกให้เธอเอารองเท้าสีเงินมากระทบกันสามครั้ง พร้อมพูดชื่อสถานที่ที่เธออยากจะไป โดโรธีกอดเจ้าโตโต้แล้วนำรองเท้ามากระทบกันสามครั้ง แล้วพูดว่าอยากกลับบ้านของเธอที่เมืองแคนซัส ทันใดนั้นลมพัดเธอและเจ้าหมาน้อยโตโต้งุ้มเป็นวงกลมไปในอากาศ ในที่สุดทั้งสองก็กลิ้งลงบนพื้นหญ้าอันคุ้นเคย

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (นิทานพ่อมดออซ ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
♫ (Little Dorothy traveled to a strange land and met a powerful sorcerer. She traveled with her fellow adventurers. Little Dorothy has got such a brave heart, and her story became a legend in the land of Oz.) ♫
A long time ago, in a faraway land in the city of Kansas, Little Dorothy lived with Uncle Henry, Aunt Em, and her dog Toto. One day, a cyclone blew her and the house up in the sky and fell upon the witch of the east living in the land of Oz, killing her. Her body vanished, and only the witch's silver magical shoes remained.
The people of the Land of Oz thanked Dorothy for killing the evil witch and gave her the witch's magical shoes. Dorothy wanted to find a way home, and they advised her to ask the Great Wizard of Oz, who had the courage and was superior to anyone in this land, for directions. The Wizard's castle was at the end of the yellow brick road, and she and Toto immediately set out to find the Wizard.

On the way, as she was walking through the fields, she came across a talking Scarecrow. So she said to him,
“I'm on my way to meet the Wizard of Oz. Do you know him?
“Hmm, who is this, The Wizard of Oz? I don't know anyone by that name. Actually, I don't know anyone because I have no brain."
“Then shall we find the wizard together? Maybe he can give you a brain?”
“Okay, let's go.”

Dorothy and Scarecrow continued their journey. That night in a cottage, she came across the Tin Man. He was stiff and rusty all over, so she poured oil on his joints until he could move. The Tin Man thought that the wizard might be able to give him a heart. Therefore, he asked if he could join them on their journey to Emerald City.

They came across a big lion roaring at Toto on the way, but he wasn't scary at all. Dorothy called him a cowardly Lion who could bully even the smallest dogs. He accepted this fact and asked to travel to see the wizard, for he might be able to give him some courage.

Dorothy and her friends finally arrived in Emerald City and met the wizard with a huge head.
“I am the Wizard of Oz. What do you want?”
“My name is Dorothy. I want to go home to Kansas City.”
“How about the Scarecrow? What do you want?”
“I want to have a brain so I can think, read and remember everything.”
“I am Tin Man. I want a heart so I can have feelings like a normal human.”
“What about you, Lion?”
“I want courage so that everyone will fear me.”
“Yes, you shall have everything you wish, but on the condition that you kill the Wicked Witch of the West first.”
They set out to meet the Wicked Witch of the West. While on their way, the witch ordered a pack of wolves to tear up Dorothy and her friends. But the wolves were frightened of Lion and ran back. The witch then ordered the crows to chase them away. Fearful of Scarecrow, they flew back. The witch then ordered the bees to sting them. But they couldn’t sting a Tin Man. Finally, the witch intended to hurt Dorothy, but this couldn’t be done because the silver shoes that she was wearing had magical powers. The wicked witch tried to snatch the shoes from Dorothy, so she splashed water on the witch. Suddenly the evil witch shrunk into a tiny, little poodle.
(Poodle barking)
When Dorothy and her friends defeated the Wicked Witch of the West, they hurriedly returned to the wizard. Knowing the truth that the giant-headed wizard was a small and kind old man, they begged the Wizard of Oz for their reward.
(We happily defeated the evil witch. Where are our prizes? We happily defeated the wicked witch. Where are our prizes?
♫ (Come here, Scarecrow. Come and take your brain. Here is a small pin. Stick it into your head.) ♫
“Wow, I'm smart now. My thoughts are suddenly clear. I can read and write fully because I now have a brain like the humans.”

“Is this my heart? I like it greatly. I can feel love and many emotions as varied as a human’s heart.”
♫ (Cowardly Lion, do you want courage? Drink this emerald water, and you shall find your courage.) ♫
“Wow, I'm braver than anyone. From now on, I will no longer be afraid. Whoever threatens me, I will fear not, for I'm brave and not afraid of anyone. Woo!”
Dorothy, who wanted to go home, was taken by the wizard to seek help from the fairy Glinda. The fairy told her to tap her silver shoes together three times while saying the name of the place she would like to go. Dorothy held on to Toto, tapped her shoes three times, and said she wanted to return to her home in Kansas City. Suddenly, the wind blew her and Little Toto into a spiral in the air. Finally, the two of them rolled onto the familiar grass.
Aunt Em ran over and hugged her. Dorothy was glad to come home and tell her aunt all about her friends and their journey in the Land of Oz
