เรื่องความเร็ว ปูม้ากล้าหาญตัวนี้มั่นใจว่าไม่แพ้ใคร จึงได้ท้าวิ่งแข่งกับปูลม ปูจันทร์ และยังกล้าท้าความเร็วกับพระจันทร์อีกด้วย ปูม้ากล้าหาญตัวนี้จะเอาชนะ และเป็นเจ้าแห่งความเร็วได้หรือไม่
กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้วเราจะไม่เล่า เราจะเล่ากาลหนึ่งครั้งยังไม่นานเท่าไหร่ ยังมีเจ้าปูม้ารูปหล่อ กล้ามใหญ่ ใจกล้า และบ้าแข่งขันอยู่ตัวนึง ไปไหนพบใครก็ชอบท้าให้มาวิ่งแข่ง จนเม่น หอย ปู ปลา เอือมระอาไปตาม ๆ กัน
อยู่มาวันนึง ขณะที่มันวิ่งเล่น ก็เหลือบตาไปเห็น เจ้าม้าน้ำหนุ่มกรุ้มกริ่มม้วนหางเกาะก้านสาหร่ายอยู่พอดี มันจึงร้องท้าทันที
“เฮ้ย! เจ้าม้าน้ำ เจ้าถือดียังไงมาใช้สกุลม้าเหมือนข้า ท่าทางก็เชื่องช้าอืดอาด เสีย ๆ ๆ เสียชื่อสกุลม้าอย่างข้าหมด แน่จริงอะ เจ้ามาวิ่งแข่งกับข้าหน่อยปะไร ผู้ใดแพ้ ห้ามใช่สกุลม้าอีกต่อไป”
เจ้าม้าน้ำก็จ๋อยลอยน้ำนิ่ง “ข้าไม่คิดจะแข่งขันกับท่านหรอก ถ้าท่านอยากจะแข่งอ่ะ ท่านก็หาม้าจริง ๆ ที่อยู่บนบกมาแข่งด้วยสิถึงจะคู่ควร ม้าจริง ๆ อะ เขาว่าวิ่งเร็วราวกับพายุเลยนะท่าน”
“ชิชะ! เจ้าม้าน้ำ เจ้าไม่ต้องยกเอาม้าบกมาอวดอ้างสรรพคุณหรอก ข้าเคยได้ยินมาว่า ม้าบกน่ะ มันมีแค่สี่ขา แค่นับขาไม่รวมก้ามของข้าเนี้ย ข้าก็ชนะมันแล้ว”
“แต่ไม่แน่นะ เขาว่าม้าเนี่ยถึงมันจะมีสี่ขาก็จริง แต่ขามันทั้งยาวทั้งใหญ่ แล้วก็แข็งแรงมากด้วย ถ้าท่านแน่จริง ท่านขึ้นไปวิ่งแข่งกับม้าสิ ข้าขอเอาใจช่วย ไปเดี๋ยวนี้เลยก็ดีนะ ท่านจะได้รู้แพ้รู้ชนะกันไปเลย”
ปูม้าได้ฟังดังนั้น มันคิดว่าไม่เลวเลยทีเดียว เกิดเป็นปูม้าทั้งที ชาตินี้ควรจะวิ่งแข่งกับม้าให้รู้กันซะเลย จากนั้นมันก็มุ่งหน้าเข้าหาฝั่ง
♫ ปูม้า ข้านี่แน่กว่าใคร ข้านี่แสนยิ่งใหญ่ วิ่งเร็วกว่าใคร เพราะข้าคือปูม้า ห้า ๆ ๆ ๆ ๆ ♫
พอมันโผล่พ้นจากน้ำทะเลขึ้นฝั่งได้ ก็สอดส่ายสายตาหาม้าบกทันที แต่ภาพที่มันเห็นนั้นเป็นหาดทรายขาว ทอดยาวสุดลูกหูลูกตา มีรูปูเล็ก ๆ เรียงรายไปทั่ว มันรู้สึกว่ามีบางสิ่ง วิ่งตัดหน้ารวดเร็วราวกับสายลมพัดผ่าน ฟิ้ว!
“เฮ้ยย หยุดเดี๋ยวนี้นะ! ใครบังอาจมาวิ่งตัดหน้าปูผู้กล้าหาญจากท้องทะเล”
สิ่งที่อยู่ใกล้ ๆ บัดนี้เห็นชัดถนัดตา “ข้าคือปูลม ทายาทแห่งพระพายผู้พัดพริ้ววว ท่านปูม้าจะให้ข้าหยุดทำไมหรอ”
“ข้าขอถามหน่อยเถอะเจ้าปูลม เจ้าปูหนุ่มชุ่มชื้น เจ้าอยู่ชายทะเลแห่งนี้เคยเห็นม้าบ้างไหม”
“อ่อ เคย ๆ เห็นบ่อยทีเดียว แล้วท่านขึ้นมาสอดแสวงหาม้า เพื่อการอันใดรึ”
“ฮ่าๆๆๆ ข้าอยากจะมาท้าประลองวิ่งแข่งสักครา”
“ฮ่าๆๆๆ พูดเป็นเล่นไปน่ะท่าน โธ่! ท่านปูม้า อย่าว่าแต่วิ่งแข่งกับม้าเลย แม้แต่วิ่งแข่งกับข้าเนี่ย ข้าว่าข้าาก็ยังวิ่งได้เร็วกว่าท่านเสียอีก”
ปูม้าได้ฟังดังนั้นก็โกธร “หนอย! เจ้าปูลม! เจ้าอวดกล้ายังไงเจ้ารู้ไหม บรรดาปูทั้งในสากลสมุทรที่ข้าแข่งมา ไม่เคยมีตัวใดตามข้าทัน”
“โหยยย นั่นมันตัวอื่นไม่ใช่ข้า ถ้าอย่างงั้นน่ะ ท่านมาลองกับข้าซักตั้งไหมล่ะ โธ่! เจ้าปูม้าขี้เบ่ง ยังไม่เคยเจอของจริง”
เหล่าสรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลายที่อยู่บริเวณนั้นก็โผล่หน้าพ้นรู แหวกดงพงหญ้าป่าชายเลนออกมาดูทั้งสองเข้าประจำที่ กติกามีอยู่ว่า จะต้องวิ่งแข่งกันไปยังรูปูข้างหน้าที่เลือกไว้ ใครที่ลงรูได้ก่อนก็ย่อมชนะ
“เอาละน้า หนึ่ง สอง สาม”
พอถึงสามเจ้าปูม้าก็ออกวิ่งทันที ปูลมยังนับ สี่ ห้า หก ต่อไป แล้วปูลมเป็นฝ่ายวิ่งตามในขณะที่ปูม้าวิ่งนำหน้าไปก่อน แต่ด้วยลีลาการวิ่งที่ นุ่ม เบา แต่รวดเร็วราวกับลมพัดพริ้วสมชายาทายาทแห่งสายลม เจ้าปูลมก็แซงหน้าปูม้าแล้วลงรูไปได้ก่อน
กองเชียร์ส่งเสียงฮฮา แต่ปูม้าก็หายอมแพ้ไม่ “โอ้ย! ก็ท่านได้เปรียบนี่นา ท่านวิ่งบนบกอันเป็นถิ่นของท่านน่ะ เก่งจริงท่านไปวิ่งแข่งกับข้าใต้น้ำซักหนสิ ถ้าท่านชนะอีกครั้ง ข้าถึงจะถือว่าข้าแพ้”
“โอ้ย! โมเมโมเม ถ้าท่านต้องการอย่างนั้นก็ลองดู”
ปูลมก็ตามปูม้าลงไปในน้ำ ผลปรากฎว่าปูลมผ่ายแพ้ไร้ทางสู้ เพราะเพียงแต่มันเริ่มวิ่งก็โดนก็กระแสคลื่นใต้น้ำซึ่งมันไม่เคยคุ้นพัดจนตัวปลิวไป ในขณะที่ปูม้าวิ่งอย่างเริงร่าจนไปถึงจุดหมายต้นปะการังอันเป็นสัญญานหลักชัยได้อย่างสบาย ๆ
ปูลมยกกล้ามยอมรับความพ่ายแพ้หนนี้แต่โดยดี “สรุปว่าเราเสมอกันก็แล้วกันนะท่าน” แต่ปูม้าไม่ยอม
♫ ข้าไม่เคยแพ้ใคร เกิดมาไม่เคยเสมอ ไม่อยากเสมอใคร อยากชนะอย่างเดียว อยากชนะอย่างเดียวทำไงดี ♫
ระหว่างนั้นก็มีเจ้าปูจันทร์น้อย เดินเล่นผ่านมาพอดี ตัวเล็ก ๆ กลม ๆ เหมือนพระจันทร์ดวงน้อย ๆ แต่ใคร ๆ ชอบเรียกมันว่า ปูจันทร์ง่อย เพราะตัวมันเล็ก และขามันก็สั้นเหมือนกับคนเป็นง่อย
“ข้าไม่เคยแพ้ใคร แต่ก็ไม่เคยชนะ ข้าเสมอตลอดเลย เพราะว่าข้าไม่ชอบแข่งขัน ข้าเคยแต่วิ่งเล่นชมจันทร์ พอข้าวิ่งช้า ๆ พระจันทร์ก็ลอยช้า ๆ พอข้าวิ่งเร็วพระจันทร์ก็ลอยเร็วทันที ข้ามีพระจันทร์ติดตามอยู่เสมอ”
“หนอย! อย่าดีกว่าเลยเจ้าปูขาง่อย เจ้ามีปมด้อยเจ้าเลยไม่กล้าแข่งขันอะสิ พระจันทร์อะนะเชื่องช้ายิ่งกว่าแมงกะพรุนซะอีก”
ว่าแล้วเจ้าปูม้าก็ออกวิ่ง หมายจะแข่งกับพระจันทร์อวดเจ้าปูลมและปูจันทร์น้อย แต่ปูม้าก็ต้องประหลาดใจ เพราะไม่ว่ามันจะวิ่งเร็วเพียงใด พระจันทร์ก็ลอยตามมันทันเสมอ มันวิ่งช้า ๆ ดวงจันทร์ก็ลอยตามช้า ๆ พอมันวิ่งเร็วดวงจันทร์ก็ลอยเร็วตามมันทันอีก
“โอ้! อัศจรรย์ ทำไมดวงจันทร์ถึงลอยตามข้าทันเสมอเลยเนี่ย วันนี้ข้ายังไม่ได้แข่งชนะใครเลย ปูม้าอย่างข้าอยากชนะ อยากชนะ อึดอัด อึดอัด อึดอัดเหลือเกิน อยากถอดกระดอง”
ดวงจันทร์จึงร้องทักว่า “ทำไมท่านถึงกล้าหาญแต่จะเอาชนะเล่า ทำไมท่านไม่กล้าเสมอหรือกล้าแพ้กับใครอื่นบ้างล่ะ หากคิดจะเป็นปูม้ากล้าหาญจริงล่ะก็ ควรจะกล้าแพ้ให้ได้ด้วยนะท่าน สำหรับท่านทั้งสอง หากท่านยังชอบการแข่งขัน วันนี้ก็ได้ที่หนึ่งมาคนละครั้งแล้ว น่าจะลองวิ่งแข่งกันใหม่ ตั้งกติกาว่า ถ้าหากใครได้ที่สอง ผู้นั้นจึงจะเป็นผู้ชนะ มาลองแข่งความสามารถให้ได้ที่สองกันเถอะ แล้วท่านก็จะรู้ ว่าบางทีการแข่งให้ได้ที่สองนั้นน่ะ ยากกว่าการให้ได้ที่หนึ่งอีกนะท่าน”
ปูม้ากับปูลมจึงทดลองวิ่งแข่งกันเพื่อชิงความเป็นที่สอง พอเริ่มแข่งขันมันก็พยายามวิ่งช้า ๆ ช้า ๆ ช้ากว่าปูจันทร์ง่อยที่พยายามจะเข้ามาร่วมแข่งด้วยซะอีก ทั้งหมดเลยต้องค่อย ๆ วิ่งไปพลาง ถอยไปพลาง บางตัววิ่งเร็วก็กลัวว่าจะได้ที่หนึ่ง บางตัวถอยช้าก็กลัวจะช้ากว่าปูจันทร์ง่อย แล้วก็จะกลายเป็นที่สามไปซะอีก
“อย่าหยุดสิ เก่งจริงต้องวิ่งไปเรื่อย ๆ ใครได้ที่สองถึงจะชนะไง”
“หึยยยนี่ก็พยายามสุดแล้วนะเนี่ย ไปได้กี่กระดึ๊บเอง”
ทั้งสามตัวใช้เวลาแข่งขันกันนานมาก ไม่มีทีท่าว่าใครจะได้ที่สองเลย
“เรานี่นะ นอนหลับมาสามตื่นแล้วก็ยังนำอยู่ดีเลยอะ นี่พวกเธอวิ่ง ๆ กันหน่อยดิ วิ่ง ๆ หน่อย วิ่งหน่อย ขอร้องเหอะ วิ่ง ๆ ๆ เร็ว ๆ”
“วิ่งแล้ว วิ่งแล้วไง นี่ฉันกำลังวิ่งอยู่นะ”
“เอ้ย! ท่านอย่ามัวแต่พูดดิ เร็วรีบไปเร็ว”
“ไป ๆ พวกเราไปกันเร็ว ไป”
“ข้าไปก่อนนะ ข้าไปก่อนนะ ไปกันหน่อยเร็ว ก็วิ่งอยู่นี่ไงเล่า”
“โหย! อึดอัด ไม่เอาแล้ว นี่ชวนฉันเล่นอะไรอยู่เนี่ย ฉันไม่เคยทำอะไรอย่างนี้มาก่อนในชีวิตเลยนะเนี่ย ถ้าเกิดพวกตระกูลปูลมของฉันมาเห็นฉันเนี่ย เสียชื่อวงศ์ตระกูลหมดเลยนะ พริ้วเบามาตลอดชีวิตเลย แล้วดูดิมากระดึ๊บ ๆ ๆ มันรู้สึกอึดอัดชอบกล เบื่อแล้ว ไม่เล่นแล้ว กลับบ้านดีกว่า”
“เฮ้ย ๆ ๆ ท่านปูลม ไม่แข่งไม่ได้นะ เกิดท่านไม่แข่งแล้วข้ากับปูจัททร์ง่อยแข่งกัน ข้าก็ต้องได้ที่หนึ่งแน่นอนอยู่แล้ว”
“อ้าวข้าก็ได้ที่สองไง”
“ข้าไม่ยอมหรอก”
“ท่านเอ๊ย! เราแข่งกันมาขนอายุปูนนี้แล้ว ยังไม่มีใครนำใครเลยนะ ถ้าเล่นเรียงหน้ากระดานอย่างนี้ไปตลอด ข้ากลับบ้านแล้ว ไม่เอาแล้ว”
“เอ๊ย! กลับบ้านไม่ได้นะ เจ้าต้องอยู่เป็นที่หนึ่ง ให้ข้าเป็นที่สอง แล้วให้เจ้าจันทร์ง่อยเป็นที่สาม”
“ข้าไม่ยอมอยู่แล้ว”
“ไม่สนแล้ว ตกลงกันเองแล้วกัน กลับบ้านแล้ว ไปแล้ว”
“เฮ้ย! เจ้ากลับไม่ได้”
“อึดอัดเว้ย! อึดอัด”
“ข้าก็อึดอัดเหมือนกัน”
“ข้าไม่เห็นอึดอัดเลย ข้าวิ่งต่อนะ”
ตั้งแต่วันนั้นเป็นต้นมา ปูม้าก็ชักจะไม่ชอบการแข่งขันซักเท่าไหร่ แต่ถ้าเมื่อมีการแข่งขันครั้งใด ปูม้าก็หัดที่จะเป็นผู้แพ้บ้าง ผู้ชนะบ้าง และหัดเสมอบ้างจนชำนาญ

The Brave, Blue Crab (นิทานปูม้ากล้าหาญ ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
Once upon a time, no, scrub that. I shall say… once at a time, not too long ago, lived a handsome and brave Blue Crab with big claws who loved to compete. No matter where he went or whom he met, he would challenge them to a race until the porcupines, clams, crabs, and fish all tired of him. One day while he was playing, he glanced over and saw a young seahorse with a grim expression whose tail was curling around the algae stalk. He immediately challenged the seahorse to a race.
“Hey, seahorse, how dare you use the same surname as me? You seem slow and sluggish, spoiling, spoiling the horse’s good name. If you dare, why don’t you come and race with me? The loser will no longer get to use the horse's surname.
The seahorse was emotionless and floated in the still water.
“I don’t intend to compete with you, sir. If you really want to race, why don’t you find a real horse on land to race with to see if you’re truly deserving of the Horse surname? They say real horses gallop as fast as the storm, sir”.
“Pfft… little seahorse. You don’t have to bring up the land horse to mention its merits. I’ve heard that land horses only have four legs. Just counting my legs and not including my claws, I’m already the winner! Hahaha”

The Blue Crab did not think this was such a bad idea upon hearing it. Being born as a crab, he should at least race with a real horse in this lifetime to see who shall win. After thinking so, the Blue Crab headed towards the shore.

When he emerged from the water and into the shore, he immediately swept his gaze in search of a land horse. But the picture that he saw was a long stretch of white, sandy beach as far as the eye could see. There were crab burrows arranged in lines throughout the shore. He felt something run across his eyes as fast as a gust of wind.
Whoosh.
“Hey, stop it! How dare you run across the brave, Blue Crab from the sea”.
Now, the nearby creature could be seen clearly.
“I am the Ghost Crab, the Lord of the Winds heir. Why do you want me to stop”?
“Let me ask you something, Ghost Crab. You live on the seashore. Have you ever seen a horse”?
“Ahh, yes, yes. I have seen it quite often. Why have you come ashore to find a horse”?
“Hehehe. I would like to challenge a horse to a race for once”.
“Hahaha. Are you joking, sir? Mr. Blue Crab, don’t even think about competing with a horse. Even if you try to race with me, I think I’d still be faster than you”.
Upon hearing this, the Blue Crab got angry.
“Hmph, Ghost Crab. How dare you show off? Don’t you know that among all the sea creatures that I’ve competed with, no one has been able to catch up to me?
“Well, that’s them, not me. If that is true, sir, why don’t you give it a try? Or are you just a bragger? I bet you’ve never seen the real thing.”
All the creatures in the area came out of their burrows, breaking through the grass in the mangrove swamp to watch the race. The rule is as follows: One must race to the chosen crab burrow ahead. The first one to go into the hole wins.
“All right, one, two, three, four, five, six.”
When the count reached number three, the Blue Crab took off. The Ghost Crab counted to four, five, and six, and only after that did he start running after.
Although the Blue Crab had a head start, the Ghost Crab’s gentle and swift running form like that of a wind, deserving of the title of heir to the Lord of the Winds, the Ghost Crab surpassed the Blue Crab and leaped into the hole first. The surrounding creatures cheered.

“Woah, how presumptuous. If that’s what you want, then that’s what I shall try”.
The Ghost Crab followed the Blue Crab into the water. As a result, the Ghost Crab was defeated and unable to fight, for as soon as he started running, he was hit by an underwater current that swept him away.
The Blue Crab ran happily and comfortably to the finish line, which was the coral tree. The Ghost Crab lifted his claws to accept defeat just this once.
“I guess it’s a draw, sir”.
But the Blue Crap didn’t accept this.
