เรื่องราวสุดการผจญภัยสุดคลาสสิค จากเมล็ดถั่วหยิบมือที่แลกกับวัวมา ได้นำพาแจ๊ค เด็กหนุ่มผู้กล้าหาญ ไปเอาตัวรอดในปราสาทของยักษ์ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่บนท้องฟ้า และพบกับไก่ที่ออกไข่เป็นทองคำล้ำค่า
ณ เกาะใหญ่ในทะเลแห่งหนึ่ง ที่เกาะแห่งนี้มีบ้านเรือนหลังเล็ก ๆ ตั้งกระจัดกระจายอยู่ตามชายหาดหรือไม่ก็อยู่ใต้ต้นไม้ใหญ่ ที่สุดชายหาด มีบ้านไม้เก่า ๆ หลังนึงซ่อนตัวอยู่ตรงนั้นอย่างโดดเดี่ยว นั่นคือบ้านของแจ็คกับแม่ของเขา
แจ็คอยู่กันสองคนกับแม่มานานเท่าที่เขาจำได้ และทุกอย่างรอบตัวของแจ็คก็ดูจะขัดสนมาโดยตลอด จนแจ็คไม่เคยนึกภาพสิ่งที่ดีกว่าของครอบครัวออกเลย แม้ว่าแม่จะพยายามพูดให้เขาอดทนเพื่ออนาคตที่ดีกว่าอยู่บ่อย ๆ ก็ตาม

ดวงอาทิตย์กำลังค่อย ๆ เคลื่อนไปประจำที่ตรงกลางฟ้า เสียงนกที่เจื้อยแจ้วตั้งแต่ตอนเช้า เริ่มค่อย ๆ เงียบลง เหลือแต่เสียงกระดึงห้อยคอของเจ้าวัวแก่ประจำบ้าน ที่ดังแก๊ง ๆ ตามจังหวะที่มันก้มหัวลงเล็มหญ้าตรงโคนต้นไม้ ถ้าไม่นับเสียงกระดึงนั้น เสียงท้องร้องของแจ็คก็ดังเป็นจังหวะมาสักพักใหญ่ละ เขากับแม่ยังไม่มีอะไรตกถึงท้องมาตั้งแต่เมื่อเย็นวาน
แม้ว่าแจ็คจะรู้จักกับความหิวมานานจนแทบจะเป็นเพื่อนสนิทกันแล้วก็ตาม แต่ดูเหมือนว่าวันนี้ความหิวจะอยากตีสนิทกับเขาและแม่มากเป็นพิเศษ เพราะเขารู้สึกหิวเอามาก ๆ แม่คงจะเข้าใจความหิวของแจ็คได้ดี แม่เดินมาลูบหัวเขาเบา ๆ ก่อนจะถอนหายใจยาว
“เฮ้อ เอาหล่ะแจ็ค แม่ตัดสินใจแล้ว แม่จะให้ลูกจูงเจ้าวัวแก่ไปขายที่ตลาดในเมือง เราจะได้เอาเงินมาซื้ออาหารกันนะลูกนะ” แม้ว่าเจ้าวัวแก่จะเป็นสมบัติชิ้นสุดท้ายของครอบครัวก็ตาม แต่เพื่อความอยู่รอดแม่ก็ต้องยอมขายมันไป
แจ็คจูงเจ้าวัวแก่ไปตามทางสู่เมือง ระยะทางที่เขาต้องเดินทางไม่ใช่ใกล้ ๆ ยิ่งตอนนี้เขากำลังหิวอยู่ด้วย เรี่ยวแรงก็น้อย ยิ่งคิดก็ยิ่งหิว แจ็คจึงตั้งหน้าตั้งตาจูงเจ้าวัวแก่ไปตามทาง เดินมาได้สักพัก แจ็คก็มองเห็นชายแก่คนนึงนั่งอยู่ข้างทาง ท่าทางอิดโรยเหมือนคนป่วย เขาจึงเอ่ยถามออกไป
“คุณลุงครับ คุณลุงมานั่งทำไมตรงนี้หรอครับ แล้วจะไปไหนหรอครับ” ชายแก่เงยหน้าขึ้นมองแจ็ค ในมือกำถุงผ้าเล็ก ๆ เก่า ๆ อยู่ใบนึง “ลุงกำลังจะเอาเมล็ดถั่วในถุงไปขายที่ตลาดในเมืองหนะเจ้าหนู แต่เห็นทีว่าลุงคงเดินต่อไปไม่ไหวแล้วหละ คงไปไม่ถึงแน่ ๆ”
“เอ้อ เอาอย่างงี้ไหมหละเจ้าหนุ่มน้อย เจ้าจะยอมแลกวัวของเจ้ากับเมล็ดถั่วในถุงของลุงไหมหละ มันเป็นถั่วที่โตเร็วมากเลยนะแล้วมันก็จะให้ประโยชน์กับเจ้าอย่างงามเลยหละ”
เมื่อแจ็คได้ฟังอย่างนั้น ก็รู้สึกสงสารชายแก่เป็นอย่างมาก เพราะขนาดเด็กอย่างเขายังรู้สึกเหน็ดเหนื่อย แต่เนี้ยเป็นชายแก่ เรี่ยวแรงก็น้อยกว่า แจ็คก็เลยตอบตกลง ชายแก่ยื่นถุงผ้าเก่า ๆ ที่ใส่ถั่วให้กับแจ็คในด้วยมือที่สั่น ส่วนแจ็คก็ยื่นเชือกจูงวัวให้กับชายแก่ แล้วชายแก่ก็จูงวัวจากไปอย่างช้า ๆ
แจ็คไม่มั่นใจเลยซักนิดว่าเมล็ดถั่วในถุงเนี้ยจะเป็นประโยชน์กับเขาได้ยังไง แต่คิดไปก็เท่านั้น เพราะว่าตอนเนี้ยวัวก็ไม่มีละ ที่เหลืออยู่ในมือก็คือถุงถั่วใบนึง ซึ่งไม่รู้เลยว่าจะเอาไปทำอะไร
♫ เต็มไปด้วยความไม่แน่ใจ เต็มไปด้วยความไม่เข้าใจ วันนี้จะเป็นอย่างไร พรุ่งนี้จะดีขึ้นไหม ฉันควรจะทำอย่างไรกันดี ♫
เมื่อกลับถึงบ้าน แจ็คก็เล่าเรื่องราวทั้งหมดให้แม่ฟังและมันก็เป็นอย่างที่เขาคิด แม่โกธรมากและแม่ก็ผิดหวังในสิ่งที่แจ็คทำ “นี่ลูก ลูกคิดว่าเมล็ดถั่วพวกนี้จะทำให้เราทั้งคู่อิ่มได้อย่างงั้นหรอ”
แม่พูดพร้อม ๆ กับโยนถุงถั่วออกไปนอกหน้าต่าง มันลอยไปตรงตรงที่ผืนหญ้าข้างบ้านแล้วเสียงในบ้านก็เงียบลง มันเงียบจนได้ยินเสียงท้องร้องของแจ็คอย่างชัดเจน
แจ็คเสียใจมากที่ทำให้แม่ผิดหวังและนี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่เขาเห็นแม่ร้องไห้ ไม่รู้ว่าเพราะความหิวหรือความเศร้า ทำให้ทั้งสองแม่ลูกหลับไปในเวลาไม่นาน

แต่ทุกอย่างก็เปลี่ยนไป เมื่อเช้าวันใหม่เริ่มขึ้น “แจ็ค ๆ ตื่นเร็ว ๆ ลูก ตื่นเร็ว ๆ แจ็ค” แม่เรียกแจ็คเสียงดัง พร้อมกับเขย่าตัวเขาอย่างแรงจนเขาสะดุ้งตื่น
“อะไรกันครับแม่” “ดูนั้นสิลูก แจ็ค นอกหน้าต่างนั้นหนะ
แจ็คมองตามนิ้วของแม่ที่ชี้ออกไปที่นอกหน้าต่าง แล้วเขาก็ต้องแทบลืมหายใจ มันเป็นต้นถั่วที่งอกออกมาจากถุงที่แม่โยนออกไปทางหน้าต่างเมื่อคืนนี้ โคนต้นของมันงอกอยู่ตรงผืนหญ้าข้างบ้าน แต่ยอดของมันนั้นสูงงงงทะลุเสียดฟ้าขึ้นไป สูงจนแจ็คและแม่เกาะขอบหน้าต่างแล้วก็แหงนหน้ามองขึ้นไปบนฟ้า
แล้วแม่ก็ว่า “นั้นมันต้นถั่วที่งอกออกจากถุงถั่วของลูกจริง ๆ หรอหน่ะ หูย ทำไมมันถึงได้โตเร็วขนาดนี้หละเนี้ย” แจ็คนึกถึงคำพูดของชายแก่เมื่อวานนี้ว่าถั่วเหล่านี้อาจจะเป็นประโยชน์กับเขาก็ได้ แล้วเขาก็อยากจะรู้นักว่ามันจะเป็นประโยชน์ยังไง
มีทางเดียวที่เขาจะรู้ได้ “แม่ครับ เดี๋ยวผมปีนต้นถั่วขึ้นไปดูนะครับแม่ แม่รอผมอยู่ตรงนี้นะครับ”
ยังไม่ทันที่แม่จะตอบอะไร แจ็คก็เหยียบขอบหน้าต่างเพื่อส่งตัวเข้าไปเกาะที่ต้นถั่วแล้วเขาก็เริ่มปีนขึ้นไป ๆ เขาตั้งหน้าตั้งตาปีนสูงขึ้น สูงขึ้นจนมองลงมาเห็นหลังคาบ้านของเขาเล็กเท่ากล่องไม้ขีด แต่จนสูงขนาดนั้นเขาก็ยังมองไม่เห็นยอดของต้นถั่วซักที
แจ็คตัดสินใจละ เขาจะไม่มองลงไปข้างล่างอีก เพราะว่ามันเริ่มสูงขึ้นจนน่ากลัว เขาปีนขึ้นไปอย่างไม่หยุด สูงขึ้นไป สูงขึ้นจนผ่านก้อนเมฆไปก้อนแล้วก้อนเล่า ในที่สุดแจ็คก็ปีนมาถึงยอดของต้นถั่วจนได้ มันทอดตัวยาวมาสุดที่หน้าปราสาทหลังใหญ่สีทอง ที่นั่นมีขั้นบันไดสีทองอยู่ด้านหน้าปราสาท ไม่ห่างจากยอดของต้นถั่วนัก แจ็คแปลกใจมากที่เห็นปราสาทหลังใหญ่มาอยู่สูงขนาดนี้ และที่สำคัญมันตั้งตระหง่านอยู่บนก้อนเมฆ ก้อนใหญ่
“เอ้ะ นี่เราอยู่ที่ไหนกันเนี้ย ทำไมมีปราสาทหลังใหญ่มาตั้งอยู่ตรงนี้ได้หละ แล้วนี่มันเป็นปราสาทของใครกันอะ”
แจ็คไม่ต้องรอคอยคำตอบนานเลย เพราะทันใดนั้นเอง ประตูปราสาทก็เปิดออก ปรากฎยักษ์สาวตนนึง นางเดินตรงมาหาเขาและจ้องมองเขาตาไม่กระพริบ วินาทีนั้นแจ็คไม่รู้เลยว่าจะมีอะไรเกิดขึ้นอีก ทุกอย่างรอบตัวในตอนนี้มันล้วนเกินกว่าที่เขาจะจินตนาการได้
ก่อนที่แจ็คจะคิดอะไรออก ยักษ์สาวตนนั้นก็เดินมาหยุดยืนตรงหน้าเขาแล้วพูดกับเขาว่า “นี่เจ้าหนู เจ้าขึ้นมาทำอะไรที่นี่ เจ้ารู้หรือไม่ว่าที่นี่เนี้ยมันอันตรายมากนะ”
แม้จะกลัวจนขาสั่นแต่แจ็คก็แกล้งทำท่าว่าไม่กลัว ขณะที่ยืนคุยกับยักษ์สาว “เอ่อ ผม ผมต้องขอโทษจริง ๆ นะครับ พอดีผมปีนตามต้นถั่วขึ้นมาหน่ะครับ ไม่รู้จริง ๆ ว่าจะรบกวนหรือเปล่าอะครับ”
ยังไม่ทันที่ยักษ์สาวตนนั้นจะเอ่ยปากตอบอะไร อยู่พื้นดินแถวนั้นก็เริ่มสั่นสะเทือนขึ้นมา มีเสียงคล้ายเสียงกระแทกแต่หนักกว่า ใกล้เข้ามา ๆ มันเป็นเสียงฝีเท้าของเจ้ายักษ์ใหญ่ใจร้ายที่กำลงตรงมาทางนี้
ก่อนที่จะทำอะไรได้ทัน ยักษ์สาวใจดีก็ได้ขว้าเอาตัวของแจ็คมาแอบไว้ข้างหลัง เจ้ายักษ์ใหญ่เดินมาหยุดยืนตรงหน้าประตู ดวงตาดุร้ายของมันหันมามองที่ยักษ์สาวไม่กระพริบ แจ็คเกาะหลังยักษ์สาวไว้แน่นแต่ก็แอบมองจนเห็นหน้าตาอันอัปลักษณ์ของยักษ์ใหญ่อย่างชัดเจน
ตอนนั้นเองที่แจ็คสังเกตเห็นว่าที่วงแขนอันใหญ่โตของเจ้ายักษ์ที่ยาวจนเกือบจะถึงพื้น แขนข้างนึงของมันอุ้มไก่ไว้ด้วยตัวนึง ยักษ์ใหญ่ทำท่าโกรธที่ยักษ์สาวเปิดประตูปราสาททิ้งไว้ มันดึงบานประตูข้างนึงปิดแล้วหันหลังเดินกลับเข้าไปในปราสาท เหมือนยักษ์สาวจะเข้าใจ นางรีบเดินตามเข้าไปแล้วปิดประตูข้างที่เหลือโดยมีแจ็คติดนั่งอยู่ที่หลัง
ในห้องโถงใหญ่กลางปราสาท เจ้ายักษ์ใหญ่อุ้มไก่ไปวางไว้บนโต๊ะยาวตัวนึง มันนั่งลงข้าง ๆ ไก่แล้วยื่นหน้าอันบูดเบี้ยวเข้าไปใกล้ ๆ ไก่
ตอนนี้แจ็คกำลังยืนแอบดูอยู่หลังแจกันใบใหญ่ เขาเห็นเจ้าไก่ตัวนั้นนั่งลงทำท่าเหมือนจะฟักไข่และเจ้าไก่ตัวนั้นก็ออกไข่มาจริง ๆ แต่สิ่งที่ทำให้แจ็คแทบไม่เชื่อสายตาก็คือ ไข่นั้นมันคือไข่ทองคำทั้งลูก มันสะท้อนแสงแวววาวสีทองไปทั่วห้อง
เจ้ายักษ์ใหญ่เก็บไข่ทองคำใส่ในถุงผ้าสีเขียวทีละลูก ทีละลูก หยิบไข่ไปก็หาวไป ท่าทางเหมือนจะง่วงนอนเอามาก ๆ และแล้วมันก็เผลอหลับไป
แจ็ครีบขว้าโอกาสนี้ทันที เขาค่อย ๆ คลานออกมาจากหลังแจกันแล้วตรงไปที่โต๊ะยาว เขาค่อย ๆ ปีนขึ้นไป ขว้าถุงสีเขียวที่มีไข่ไก่ทองคำมาผูกไว้ที่เอว จากนั้นก็ก้มลงอุ้มไก่ กอดเอาไว้แน่นด้วยสองมือ แจ็คอุ้มไก่ลงจากโต๊ะ รีบตรงไปที่ประตูประสาท
ขณะที่เขากำลังเดินอ้อมผ่านแจกันใบเดิมนั้นเอง ถุงสีเขียวที่แจ็คผูกไว้ที่เอวก็เกิดไปเกี่ยวชนจนแจกันล้ม เสียงกรนหยุดลงในทันที แจ็คหันกลับไปมองที่ต้นเสียง แล้วก็พบว่ายักษ์ใหญ่ตนนั้นลุกขึ้นยืนแล้วก็ใช้สายตาอันดุร้ายมองมาที่เขาอย่างน่ากลัว
แจ็คไม่ต้องรอให้ใครมาบอก เขาออกวิ่งอย่างสุดชีวิตไปที่ประตูหน้าประสาท ผลักมันออกอย่างรุนแรง เสียงพื้นสะเทือนไล่หลังเขามาอย่างกระชั้นชิด พอแจ็คขว้าเอายอดต้นถั่วของเขาได้ เขาก็ไต่ลงไปอย่างรวดเร็ว เร็วจนกระทั่งบางช่วงเขาถึงกับรูดตัวเองลงไปตามต้นถั่ว
ความใหญ่เทอะทะของเจ้ายักษ์ทำให้มันไม่คล่องตัวพอที่จะตามเด็กน้อยที่ว่องไวอย่างแจ็คได้ทัน แต่มันก็ยังไม่ยอมเลิกตาม กลับวิ่งตามแจ็คมาที่ยอดต้นถั่วแล้วก็ปีนลงไปอย่างทุลักทุเล ต้นถั่วโอนเอนเพราะน้ำหนักของเจ้ายักษ์ใหญ่ แต่แจ็คก็รีบประคองตัวเองลงมาถึงพื้นหญ้าข้างบ้านได้อย่างปลอดภัย เขาแหงนหน้าขึ้นไปมองบนยอดต้นถั่ว เจ้ายักษ์ใหญ่ใจร้ายยังคงปีนลงมาอย่างทุลักทุเล
แจ็ครีบวิ่งตรงไปหยิบขวานตัดฟืนอันใหญ่ที่ข้างบ้านมาอย่างรีบร้อน ก่อนจะเงื้อสุดแขนแล้วฟันไปที่โคนต้นถั่ว เงื้อแล้วก็ฟัน ๆ จนในที่สุดต้นถั่วก็ส่งเสียงลั่น มันกำลังจะโค่นลง ไม่ทันซะละ เจ้ายักษ์ใหญ่รู้ตัวว่าต้นถั่วกำลังจะโค่นแต่มันก็ไม่สามารถปีนกลับขึ้นไปได้ทัน ร่างของมันจึงเอนไปกับลำต้นถั่วแล้วโค่นลงกระแทกพื้นตายไป

เราควรมีเมตตาต่อผู้อื่น เหมือนที่แจ๊คมีเมตตาต่อชายชรา และมีความกล้าหาญ และวางแผนให้รอบคอบในการเผชิญปัญหาต่างๆ

On a large island in the sea stood small houses scattered along the shore or under a big tree. At the end of the beach was an old wooden house hidden all alone. It was Jack and his mom’s house. They had been living together for a long time, for as long as he could remember. Everything in Jack’s life always seemed to be lacking, and he could never imagine a better situation for his family, although his mother often tried to tell him to be patient for a better future.
♫ Time flew by like lightning. I must be the king of paupers who still lives in this old, flimsy house in hopes that tomorrow will be better ♫
The sun slowly moved toward the center of the sky. The sound of birds that had chirped since the morning had gradually subsided, leaving only the sound of cowbells hanging from the neck of the old house cow that clanged and clanged as it bowed its head to nibble at the root of the tree. If not counting the sound of the cowbells, the sound of Jack's stomach has also been growling for a while. He and his mother still haven't had anything in their stomachs since yesterday evening. The old man looked up at Jack. In his hand was a small, old cloth bag.
“(coughing sound) I was going to take the beans in the bag to sell at the city market, little boy, but I see that (coughing sound) I may not be able to walk any further. Hmm, why don’t we do this, young man? Uh, would you be willing to trade your cow for the beans in my bag? They grow very fast, and they will benefit you handsomely”.
After hearing this, Jack felt great pity for the old man because even a child like him could feel exhausted, but this was an old man who had even less strength. So, Jack agreed.
The old man handed the bag that held the beans to Jack with trembling hands, and Jack handed the old man the cow’s leash. Then the old man led the cow and walked away slowly. “Is that really the beanstalk that grew from your bean bag? Wow, how did it grow so fast?”
Jack recalled the old man's words from yesterday that these beans might prove useful to him. He wanted to know how useful it could be, and there was only one way to find out.
“Mom, I'll climb up the beanstalk to see. Wait for me here."
Without giving his mom time to answer, Jack stepped on the window sill to hurl himself onto the beanstalk. Then he began to climb and climb higher and higher, so high that when he looked down, the roof of his house was as small as a matchbox. But no matter how high he was, he still couldn't see the top of the beanstalk.
Jack decided to stop looking down, for it was starting to get too scarily high. He climbed non-stop, higher, higher, and higher until he passed through cloud after cloud. Finally, Jack made it to the top of the beanstalk. It stretched all the way to the front of the big golden castle, which had a golden staircase in front, not far from the top of the beanstalk. Jack was surprised to see such a large castle so high up, and most importantly, it stood majestically on a huge cloud.
“Hey, where am I? Why is there such a big castle here? And whose castle is this"?
Jack didn't have to wait long for an answer because suddenly the castle gates opened. A young giantess appeared who walked up to him and stared at him unblinkingly. At that moment, Jack had no idea what else was going to happen. Everything surrounding him right now was beyond his imagination. Before Jack could think of anything, the young giantess came to a stop in front of him. She said to him,
“Hey kid, what are you doing up here? Don’t you know that this place is very dangerous?”
Even though he was so scared his legs trembled, Jack pretended not to be afraid as he stood and talked to the giantess.
"Uh, I, I'm really sorry. I just climbed up from the beanstalk. I don't know if I’m disturbing you?"
Before the young giantess could say anything, the ground suddenly began to tremble. There was a sound like a thumping but stronger, coming closer and closer. It was the footsteps of an evil giant coming his way. Before he could do anything, the kind giantess grabbed Jack's body and secretly hid him behind her back.
The giant came to a stop in front of the door. Its ferocious eyes stared unblinkingly at the giantess. Jack clung to the giantess’s back tightly and peeked from behind until the giant's ugly face was visible. Then, Jack noticed that he held a chicken under the giant's enormous arms, which almost reached the floor. The giant was furious that the giantess had left the castle door open. It pulled one of the doors shut, then turned and walked back into the castle. Understandingly, the giantess hurriedly followed behind him and shut the rest of the door with Jack still clinging tightly to her back.
In the large hall in the middle of the castle, the giant carried the chicken and placed it on a long table. (chicken screaming) He sat beside the chicken and put his deformed face close to it. Jack was now standing behind a large vase peeking, for he could see the rooster sitting blankly as if it was about to hatch an egg. Then that rooster laid an egg. But what made Jack almost incredulous was that the entire egg was made of gold and reflected golden light across the room. The giant put the golden eggs into the green cloth bag one by one. He picked up each egg with a yawn. He seemed to be very sleepy, and then he fell asleep.
Jack immediately seized the opportunity. He slowly crawled out from behind the vase, then went straight to the long table. He slowly climbed up, grabbed the green bag that carried the golden eggs, and tied it around his waist. Then he bent down to pick up the chicken and held it tightly with both hands. Jack carried the chicken from the table and hurried straight to the castle gate. As he walked around the same vase, the green bag that Jack had tied to his waist suddenly caught on to the vase and made it topple over. The snoring stopped immediately. Jack turned to look at the source of the voice and found that the giant had stood up and used his ferocious eyes to stare at him terrifyingly.
Jack didn't have to wait for someone to tell him. He ran desperately towards the castle's front gate and aggressively pushed it open. The sound of the ground vibrating came closer behind him. As soon as Jack grabbed the top of the beanstalk, he climbed down very fast. So fast that, at some point, Jack even slid down the beanstalk.
The giant's bulky body made him not agile enough to keep up with the nimble young Jack. But still, he didn't give up. Instead, he ran after Jack to the peak of the beanstalk and climbed down with difficulty. The beanstalk swayed under the weight of the giant, but Jack managed to prop himself down safely onto the grass in front of his house. He looked up at the top of the beanstalk. The wicked giant was still climbing down clumsily.
Jack hurriedly ran straight to pick up a large axe beside his house. Then he fully raised his arm and slashed down to the root of the beanstalk. He raised his arm and slashed, raised, and slashed. Finally, the beanstalk let out a loud noise. It was about to topple. In no time, the giant knew that the bean plant was about to fall, but it was unable to climb back up in time. His body swayed with the tumbling beanstalk, smashed into the ground, and died.
