เช้ารุ่งขึ้นพ่อเเละเเม่เลี้ยงพาเด็กทั้งสองออกไปตัดฟืนในป่า ฮันเซลเดินตามหลังไปช้า ๆเเละเเอบโรยก้อนหินสีขาวไปตลอดทาง เมื่อเด็กทั้งสองเดินเข้าไปจนถึงกลางป่าลึก เเม่เลี้ยงบอกให้เด็ก ๆ นั่งพัก ด้วยความเหนื่อยทั้งสองก็เผลอหลับไป เมื่อตื่นขึ้นมาก็ไม่เจอพ่อกับเเม่เลี้ยงเเล้ว เกรเทลร้องไห้ตกใจกลัว ฮันเซลลูบหัวแล้วปลอบน้องสาวว่า "พี่จะพาน้องกลับบ้านเอง" จากนั้นฮันเซลจูงมือพาน้องเดินตามก้อนหินสีขาวที่ได้โรยไว้ จนกลับมาถึงบ้านได้อย่างปลอดภัย พ่อของเขาร้องไห้ดีใจมาก เเต่เเม่เลี้ยงโกรธมาก
รุ่งเช้าอีกวัน พ่อไม่ยอมพาเกรเทลและฮันเซลไปปล่อยในป่าอีกแล้ว เขาสงสารลูก ๆ แต่แม่เลี้ยงใจร้ายก็ทุบตีพ่อจนสลบไป เเละเเม่เลี้ยงก็เป็นคนพาเด็กทั้งสองเข้าไปในป่าลึก เเม่เลี้ยงได้ให้ขนมปังเเก่ฮันเซลเเละเกรเทล ด้วยความฉลาดฮันเซลจึงโรยเศษขนมปังเอาไว้ตลอดทาง จนมาถึงป่าลึกมาก ๆ เเม่เลี้ยงบอกให้ทั้งสองพัก และด้วยความเหนื่อยมากกว่าเมื่อวานทั้งสองก็เผลอหลับไป เมื่อตื่นขึ้นมา สองพี่น้องก็รู้ว่าโดนแม่เลี้ยงใจร้ายทิ้งอีกแล้ว เกรเทลร้องไห้สะอึกสะอื้น ฮันเซลปลอบน้องสาวเช่นเดิม “ไม่ต้องกลัวนะเทรเทล เดี๋ยวพี่จะพาน้องกลับบ้านเอง” ฮันเซลจูงมือน้องสาวเดินตามทางเพื่อตามหาเศษขนมปัง เเต่คราวนี้โชคร้าย เพราะเศษขนมปังที่โรยไว้มีนกมาจิกกินไปหมดเเล้ว ทำให้เด็ก ๆ หลงอยู่ในป่า เกรเทลร้องไห้ตลอดทั้งคืนจนหลับไป
รุ่งเช้าเด็ก ๆ เดินหลงทางไปเจอบ้านที่ทำด้วยขนมต่าง ๆ หลายชนิด เด็กทั้งสองรีบเข้าไปกินด้วยความหิว ไม่นานนักก็มีหญิงชราเดินหลังงองุ้มออกมาจากบ้าน นางยิ้มฟันหลอพร้อมชวนเด็กทั้งสองเข้าไปในบ้าน สองพี่น้องนึกว่าตัวเองโชคดีได้เจอกับคุณยายใจดี แต่แท้จริงแล้ว หญิงแก่คนนั้นคือแม่มดใจร้าย เมื่อเข้ามาในบ้าน แม่มดเฒ่าจับฮันเซลขังไว้ในกรง และสั่งให้เกรเทลไปหาอาหารมาให้พี่ชายกิน เพื่อทำให้ฮันเซลอ้วนกว่านี้ แล้วแม่มดถึงจะจับฮันเซลกินเป็นอาหาร เกรเทล กลัวจึงทำตามคำสั่ง
ความจริงแล้ว แม้หญิงชราจะเป็นแม่มดใจร้าย แต่ด้วยความแก่ทำให้สายตาไม่ค่อยดี จึงถามเกรเทลว่า “เจ้าเด็กน้อย บอกข้าซิว่าพี่ชายของเจ้าอ้วนหรือยัง” ด้วยความฉลาดของเธอ เธอจึงให้เเม่มดจับกระดูกไก่เเทนนิ้วมือของพี่ชาย แล้วตอบว่า “พี่ฮันเซลยังตัวผอมอยู่เลยค่ะ ผอมลงมาก ๆ ด้วย” เเม่มดโมโหมาก จึงสั่งให้เกรเทลทำอาหารเพิ่มขึ้นทุกวัน ในเช้าวันต่อมา แม่มดก็ถามแบบเดิม และเกรเทลก็ทำแบบเดิม คือยื่นกระดูกไก่ให้แม่มดจับแทนนิ้วของพี่ชาย แม่มดหงุดหงิดมากที่หลายวันผ่านไปฮันเซลก็ยังไม่อ้วนขึ้นซักที จึงไม่รออีกต่อไป “ข้าไม่รอแล้ว พี่ชายเจ้ากินอาหารเท่าไหร่ก็ไม่อ้วน งั้นข้าจะกินมันทั้งที่ยังตัวผอมแบบนี้ล่ะ เจ้าเด็กน้อยไปก่อไฟในเตาผิงเดี๋ยวนี้” เกรเทลตัวสั่น ตอบแม่มดกลับไปว่า “หนูก่อไฟไม่เป็นจะ ทุกทีพี่ฮันเซลเป็นคนทำให้” แม่มดโกรธมาก จึงเดินหลังงุ้มไปก่อไฟเอง ทั้งที่ตาก็มองไม่ค่อยเห็นฟืน แม่มดจึงถามเกรเทลว่า “ไฟในเตาร้อนหรือยัง” เกรเทลจึงตอบว่า “ยังไม่ร้อนเลยจ้ะ ยายลองเดินมาดูสิจ๊ะ เตาอบเสียหรือเปล่าก็ไม่รู้” เเม่มดเฒ่าสายตาไม่ดี มัวแต่ก้มมองฟืนในเตาไฟ “ไหนดูซิ ทำไมมันยังไม่ร้อน เตาอบเสียหรือไง”
ในขณะที่แม่มดกำลังเผลอ เกรเทลจึงผลักเเม่มดเข้าไปในเตาอบ แม่มดกรีดร้องด้วยความเจ็บปวด แล้วเธอก็รีบไปช่วยพี่ชายออกมาจากกรงขัง แต่ในระหว่างที่ฮัลเซลถูกขัง เขาได้ไปเจอสมบัติของเเม่มดที่เก็บซ่อนไว้ “เกรเทลเรามาช่วยกันขนสมบัติพวกนี้กลับไปให้พ่อเราดีกว่า พ่อจะได้ไม่ต้องลำบาก ถูกแม่เลี้ยงใจร้ายรังแก” เกรเทลยิ้มดีใจ ทั้งสองรีบหยิบทองเพชรพลอยใส่ในกระเป๋าจนเต็มเเล้วรีบหนีกลับบ้าน
เมื่อชายตัดฟืนเห็นเด็ก ๆ กลับมาบ้านอย่างปลอดภัย จึงวิ่งเข้าไปกอดลูกด้วยความดีใจ “พ่อขอโทษนะลูก พ่อช่วยลูกไว้ไม่ได้” ชายตัดฟืนร้องไห้กอดลูกไว้แน่น ฮันเซลจึงถามถึงแม่เลี้ยง พ่อตอบว่า “พ่อไล่ให้เขาไปอยู่ที่อื่นแล้ว ต่อไปนี้พ่อจะไม่ยอมให้ใครมาทำร้ายลูกของพ่ออีกแล้ว” เด็กทั้งสองดีใจโผเข้ากอดพ่อ แล้วนำทองเพชรพลอยของแม่มดที่ได้มาให้พ่อนำไปขาย ได้เงินมามากมาย หลังจากนั้นมา ทั้งสามคนพ่อลูกก็อยู่ด้วยกันอย่างมีความสุข
ข้อคิดเรื่องฮัลเซลกับเกรเทล

In a little house, there lived a family. This family has a weak, sickly father, a mean, giant stepmother, and two brothers and sisters. The brother’s name is Hansel, and the sister is Gretel. Their father was a very poor woodcutter and did not have money to buy rice for the children. One night the kids eavesdrop on the father’s and stepmother’s discussion. The stepmother says, “We have to leave the two children in the forest. We can’t raise them anymore. The older they get, the more they eat.” However, the father says, “I can’t do it. They are my children.” The stepmother is so angry that she beats the father. Gretel sees this and cries. Brother Hansel pulls her in for a hug, comforts her, and tucks her into bed. Gretel cries herself to sleep. When everyone in the house is sleeping, Hansel sneaks out to collect white pebbles and puts them in his pants pockets.
The next morning, the father and stepmother take the two children out to the forest to cut firewood. Hansel walks behind slowly, sprinkling the white pebbles along the way. When the two children walk into the middle of the deep forest, the stepmother tells them to take a rest. Tired, both of them fall asleep. When they wake up, their father and stepmother are nowhere to be found. Gretel cries out in fright. Hansel strokes her head and comforts his sister, saying, “I will take you home myself.” Then he takes his sister’s hand and follows the sprinkled pebbles until they safely reach their home. Their dad cries out with great joy, but the stepmother is furious.
The next morning, the father is no longer willing to leave Hansel and Gretel in the woods again. He feels sorry for his children, but the wicked stepmother beats him until he passes out. Then, she takes them out into the deep forest. She gives some bread to Hansel and Gretel, but due to his intelligence, Hansel sprinkles bread crumbs along the entire path. When they reach the deep forest, the stepmother tells them to rest. Being more tired than yesterday, they both fall asleep. When they wake up, they realize that the evil stepmother has left them again. Gretel wails loudly while Hansel comforts his sister once again, “Don’t be afraid, Gretel. I will take you home myself.” Hansel takes his sister’s hand to find the bread crumbs, but unfortunately, the birds have eaten them, leaving the children lost in the forest. Gretel cries all night until she falls asleep.
In the morning, the children wander around until they find a house made of many kinds of sweets. The two kids rush to eat the sweets out of hunger. Not long after, an old lady with a hunched back walks out of the house. She smiles with straggly teeth and invites the kids into the house. The two children think they are lucky to have met a kind old lady, but this woman is an evil witch. When they enter the house, the old witch locks Hansel in the cage and orders Gretel to find food to feed her brother. The witch wants to make him fatter, so she can eat him for food. Gretel is afraid, so she does as she is told.
Due to her old age, the wicked witch actually has bad eyesight. So, she asks Gretel, “Little girl, tell me if your brother is fat or not.” With her cleverness, Gretel gives the witch a chicken bone to feel instead of her brother’s fingers and answers, “Hansel is still thin. He’s actually very skinny.” The witch is livid and orders Gretel to cook more food each day. The next morning, the witch asks her the same question, and Gretel continues to do the same thing, letting the witch feel the chicken bone instead of her brother’s fingers. The witch is irritated that despite several days having passed, Hansel has not gotten any fatter.
She doesn’t want to wait any longer. “I will not wait anymore. No matter how much your brother eats, he refuses to get fatter. So, I will eat him while he is still skinny. Little girl, go and start the fire in the oven right now.” Gretel trembles and answers, “I can’t make fire. Hansel is usually the one that does that.” The irate witch with the hunchback walks to the oven to start the fire herself, but because she can’t see the wood clearly, she asks Gretel, “Is the fire hot?” Gretel replies, “Not yet. Why don’t you go and have a look? Maybe the stove is not working.” The old witch has bad eyesight and scrunches down to look at the wood in the furnace. “Let me see. Why is it still not hot? Is this oven not working?”
When the witch isn’t paying attention, Gretel pushes her into the oven. The witch wails with the pain while Gretel quickly helps Hansel out of the cage. However, when Hansel was locked up, he found the witch’s hidden treasure. “Gretel, let’s bring these treasures back to our father, so he doesn’t have to suffer being bullied by our cruel stepmother. Gretel grins widely, and the two children gather gold, diamonds, and gems into their pockets until they full and hurriedly run back home.
When the woodcutter sees that his children have returned safe and sound, he runs to hug them with joy. “I’m sorry I couldn’t help you,” the woodcutter cries, hugging them tightly. Hansel then asks about the stepmother, and his father answers, “I chased her away to live elsewhere. From now on, I will not let anyone hurt my children ever again.” The two children leap into their father’s arms. They give the witch’s jewels to their father to sell at the market. They earn a lot of money, and from that day onwards, the three of them lived happily ever after.
