ทุกๆ วันตอนค่ำ ช่างทำร้องเท้าจะนั่งลงตัดแผ่นหนังเตรียมไว้สำหรับเย็บเป็นรองเท้าคู่ใหม่ในวันรุ่งขึ้น แต่วันนี้ช่างทำรองเท้าเหลือแผ่นหนังอีกแค่แผ่นเดียว ซึ่งแปลว่าเขาจะสามารถตัดรองเท้าคู่ใหม่ได้อีกเพียงแค่หนึ่งคู่ ชายทำรองท้านั่งมองแผ่นหนังในมือแล้วก็นึกในใจว่า
‘ไม่เป็นไรหรอก อย่างน้อยพรุ่งนี้เราก็มีหนังไว้ให้เย็บเป็นรองเท้าได้อีกตั้งหนึ่งคู่’
คิดได้อย่างนั้นเขาก็วางแผ่นหนังที่ตัดแล้วลงบนโต๊ะ แล้วก็เข้านอนจนหลับไป

เสียงนกร้องและเสียงน้ำไหล ปลุกช่างทำรองเท้าตื่นขึ้นในเช้าวันต่อมา ความจริงมันก็เป็นเช้าวันธรรมดาๆ เหมือนกับทุกๆวัน ช่างทำรองเท้าเตรียมตัวเปิดร้าน แต่แล้วเขาก็ต้องประหลาดใจ เมื่อเขาเหลือบมองไปที่โต๊ะทำงาน แผ่นหนังที่เขาตัดเตรียมไว้เมื่อคืน บัดนี้มันกลายเป็นรองเท้าคู่ใหม่สวยงาม ฝีมือการตัดเย็บก็ละเอียดปราณีตเกินกว่าที่เขาเคยเห็นมาจากรองเท้าคู่ใดๆ ขณะที่ช่างทำรองเท้ากำลังชื่นชมกับความปราณีตงดงามของรองเท้าคู่นั้น ลูกค้าคนหนึ่งก็เดินเข้ามาในร้าน แล้วเขาก็สะดุดเข้ากับรองเท้าคู่งามที่วางอยู่กลางโต๊ะ ลูกค้าผู้นั้นไม่ลังเลที่จะซื้อรองเท้าคู่นั้นในทันที เขาให้เงินค่ารองเท้ามากเป็นสองเท่า ด้วยความที่อยากได้รองเท้าคู่สวยคู่นั้นเป็นอย่างมาก

เมื่อช่างทำรองเท้าไปเปิดประตูร้านก็พบว่ามีลูกค้ามารอซื้อรองเท้าของเขาอยู่หลายคนละ จนเมื่อทุกคนก้าวเข้ามาในร้าน ได้เห็นรองเท้าทั้งสี่คู่นั้น ก็ต่างอุทานออกมาเหมือนๆกันว่า
“สวยจัง”
ทุกๆวันต่อจากนั้น ช่างทำรองเท้าก็จะตัดแผ่นหนังเตรียมเพื่อเย็บเป็นรองเท้าในตอนค่ำแล้วจึงเข้านอน ก่อนจะตื่นขึ้นมาพบกับรองเท้าที่สวยงามในทุกๆเช้า เป็นอย่างนี้เรื่อยมา ร้านเล็กๆของเขาเริ่มกลายเป็นร้านรองเท้าที่มีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังและทำให้ช่างทำรองเท้ากลายเป็นคนร่ำรวยในที่สุด

ค่ำวันหนึ่งขณะที่ช่างทำรองเท้ากำลังตัดแผ่นหนัง ก็เตรียมไว้เช่นเคย อยู่ๆ เขาก็พูดกับภรรยาของเขาขึ้นมาว่า
“อืม คืนนี้เราอย่าเพิ่งรีบเข้านอนเลยดีมั้ย ฉันชักอยากจะรู้แล้วว่าใครกันที่แอบมาเย็บรเองเท้าให้เราทุกคืน”
ภรรยาของช่างทำรองเท้าเห็นด้วย เพราะเธอก็อยากรู้เหมือนกัน
เมื่อช่างทำรองเท้าตัดแผ่นหนังเตรียมไว้จนเสร็จเรียบร้อย เขาก็ปิดประตู ดับไฟ ทำทีเหมือนกำลังจะเข้านอน แต่แล้วทั้งเขาและภรรยาก็ไปซ่อนตัวอยู่เงียบๆ ตรงข้างห้อง
“(เสียงหาว) ชักจะเริ่มง่วงแล้วนะเนี่ย”
เวลาผ่านไปจนถึงเที่ยงคืน ขณะที่ช่างทำรองเท้าและภรรยากำลังเริ่มง่วง บนโต๊ะกลางห้องก็ปรากฎแสงเรืองรองเล็กๆ สองดวง มันค่อยๆสว่างขึ้น แล้วก็สว่างวาบ จากนั้นก็ปรากฎเป็นภูตน้อยตัวเล็กๆ สองตน ตัวเล็กเหมือนเด็ก แต่ไม่มีเสื้อผ้าติดตัวเลยสักชิ้น และภูตน้อยทั้งสองกด็เริ่มลงมือเย็บรองเท้า ทั้งคู่เย็บรองเท้าอย่างคล่องแคล่ว งดงาม ปราณีตไม่มีที่ติ เย็บอยู่เพียงครู่เดียวก็เสร็จเป็นรองเท้าที่สวยงามหลายคู่ เมื่อเสร็จแล้วภูตน้อยทั้งสองก็กระโดดดีใจ ก่อนที่จะหายตัวไปพร้อมๆกับแสงวสบอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ทิ้งไว้แต่รองเท้าที่สวยงามหลายคู่เอาไว้ให้กับช่างทำรองเท้าและภรรยา
ในที่สุดช่างทำรองเท้าและภรรยาก็รู้ว่าเป็นภูตน้องทั้งสองนี่เองที่แอบมาเย็บรองเท้าอันสวยงามไว้ให้ในยามค่ำคืน และแม้ในคืนที่หนาวเหน็บแบบนี้ภูตน้อยก็ยังคงมาทำหน้าที่ ทั้งๆที่ไม่มีเสื้อผ้าติดตัวเลยสักชิ้น ช่างทำรองเท้าและภรรยาจึงคิดกันว่าจะหาทางตอบแทนภูตน้อยยังไงดี
“ฉันว่าเราน่าจะหาทางตอบแทนภูตน้อยสักหน่อยนะ” ภรรยาของเขาก็เห็นด้วย
“ฉันว่าใกล้คริสต์มาสอากาศหนาวอย่างเนี้ย เราเย็บเสื้อผ้าให้ภูตน้อยทั้งสองดีมั้ย” แล้วภรรยาช่างทำรองเท้าจึงบรรจงเย็บเสื้อ กางเกง ถุงเท้า และหมวกขนาดจิ๋วอย่างสวยงาม เพื่อให้ภูตน้อยทั้งสอง
คืนนั้นชายทำรองเท้าและภรรยาก็นำเอาเสื้อผ้าที่เตรียมไว้วางเรียงไว้บนโต๊ะ แทนที่จะเป็นแผ่นหนังทำรองเท้า แล้วทั้งคู่ก็ซ่อนตัวอยู่ข้างๆ ห้อง เพื่อรอดูสิ่งที่จะเกิดขึ้น
ตรงเวลาเที่ยงคืนพอดี ภูตน้อยทั้งสองก็ปรากฎกายขึ้นหลังแสงวสบกลางห้อง ภูตน้อยมองเห็นเสื้อผ้าวางอยู่แทนที่หนังทำรองเท้าก็แปลกใจ แต่พอเห็นว่าเป็นเสื้อผ้าขนาดเล็กที่จัดเตรียมไว้ให้ทั้งคู่ก็กระโดตัวลอยดีใจ จับตัวกันเต้นรำไปรอบๆห้อง พร้อมกับร้องเพลง

นับจากคืนนั้น ภูตน้อยทั้งสองก็ไม่ได้กลับไปเย็บรองเท้าอีกเลย แม้ว่าช่างทำรองเท้าจะยังคิดถึงภูตน้อยที่เคยมาช่วยเขาทำรองเท้า แต่ตอนนี้เขาก็ตั้งใจเย็บรองเท้าให้สวยงามทุกๆคู่ด้วยมือของเขาเอง แม้จะมีรองเท้าวางขายวันละไม่กี่คู่ แต่ร้านรองเท้าเล็กๆที่ปลายสุดถนนริมแม่น้ำสายนั้น ก็ได้กลายเป็นร้านรองเท้าที่น่ารักและสร้างความสุขให้กับช่างทำรองเท้าและภรรยาตลอดมา

In a small town situated near a small river that flowed lazily all year, many shops lined the gray brick road along this river. At the end of the road was a shoe shop. It was an old shoe shop run by a skilled shoemaker, but because it was a small shop, it didn’t get much attention from the public. More recently, the shop's business began to dwindle more. Some days he couldn’t sell a pair of shoes at all, but the shoemaker didn't care, for he enjoyed making shoes. He continued to work hard to make the shoes that he loved.
Every evening, the shoemaker would sit down and cut the sheets of leather ready to be sewn into a new pair of shoes the next day. But today, the shoemaker had only one piece of leather left, which meant he could only make one more pair of new shoes. The shoemaker sat looking at the piece of leather in his hand and thought to himself,
“It's okay. At least tomorrow, I will have some leather to sew into another pair of shoes”.
Upon thinking this, he placed the cut piece of leather on the table and went to sleep.

The sound of birds chirping and the water flowing woke the shoemaker up the next day. Glancing at the working table, the piece of leather that he had prepared last night had now turned into a brand-new pair of shoes.
The sewing craftsmanship was more meticulous than he had ever seen in any pair of shoes.
While the shoemaker was admiring the beautiful details of the shoes, a customer walked into the store and was stopped by the gorgeous shoes laid in the middle of the table. The customer did not hesitate to buy the shoes and paid twice as much for them, for he truly wanted to own them.
Even though the shoemaker had only sold a pair of shoes, he now had enough money to buy a second piece of leather to sew into two new pairs of shoes.
Nighttime arrived, and the shoemaker cut out pieces of leather to make shoes for the next day. Tonight, he prepared pieces of leather for two pairs of shoes. He put them on the table and went to sleep. The sound of birds woke him up once again like any other day, but this morning, he hurriedly got out of bed and rushed straight to the desk. He was curious to know what would happen to the two pieces of leather he had prepared. The shoemaker was surprised again, for two beautiful pairs of shoes were on the table. They were as beautiful as yesterday’s pair.
“What beautiful shoes,” the shoemaker kept his curiosity to himself and sold those two pairs of shoes to the first two customers who walked into the store. The shoemaker was glad that the profits from the sale of both pairs of shoes gave him enough money to buy four new pieces of leather.

The birds had just started chirping.
“Ooh, it’s almost morning,” the shoemaker woke up in excitement. He hurriedly got out of bed and immediately headed straight to his working table. He had to jump for joy; this morning, four beautiful pairs of shoes stood in place of the pieces of leather he had prepared.

When the shoemaker opened the shop door, he discovered that many customers were waiting to buy his shoes. When everyone stepped into the store and saw the four pairs of shoes, they all exclaimed,
“How beautiful”!

It was almost midnight. While the shoemaker and his wife were getting sleepy, two small glowing lights appeared on the table in the middle of the room, gradually brightening and then flashing. Two little elves appeared, as small as children, but not a single piece of clothing was on them. And the two little elves started sewing shoes. Both of them skillfully sewed the shoes exquisitely, meticulously, and flawlessly. It only took them a few moments to complete several pairs of beautiful shoes. When they finished, the two little fairies jumped for joy before disappearing with the light once again, leaving many beautiful shoes for the shoemaker and his wife.
Finally, the shoemaker and his wife realized that these two elves secretly came to make beautiful shoes at night. And even on this cold night, the little fairies still came to do their duty, despite not having a single piece of clothing on them. Thus, the shoemaker and his wife began to think of ways to repay the little elves.
“I think we should find a way to repay the little elves,” his wife agreed.
“Well, it's almost Christmas, and it's so cold. Shall we sew clothes for the two little elves?” Then the shoemaker's wife meticulously sewed a beautiful shirt, pants, socks, and a miniature hat for the two little elves.
That night, the shoemaker and his wife put the prepared clothes on the table instead of leather sheets. Then both of them hid on the other side of the room and waited to see what would happen.
As soon as the clock struck midnight, the two little elves appeared in the middle of the room with a flashing light. The little elves were surprised to see clothes instead of shoe leather. But when they saw that they were a small piece of clothing that had been prepared for them, they jumped up in joy and grabbed each other to dance and sing around the room.
